Most of you know I love dogs. Been like this since i was a baby. I can't resist stopping to say "hi" and if they let me, kiss their heads. This day was no different. I was in a store when I noticed a beautiful young shepherd behind the counter. I had to go say hello.

He wasn’t her dog—he was a foster. That’s how I first learned about Roxy’s Ranch Haven.
Roxy’s Ranch Haven is a nonprofit dog rescue in Petaluma that focuses on saving dogs, working breeds like shepherds, from overcrowded California shelters. Especially those on the euthanasia list. What sets Roxy’s work apart is how she meets every dog where they are. They’re not rushed. They get time to decompress, recover, and rebuild trust before finding the right home. Her goal isn’t just adoption, but the right adoption, for both dog and family.

That cute shepherd got me thinking about how I could help, so I offered to photograph some of the new arrivals. Many of these dogs have faced serious trauma, and even a photo session can be intimidating at first. But with Roxy and her foster team guiding them, their personalities start to shine. Those cute moments make people stop scrolling and can even change a dog’s life.
The founder, Roxanne Albin is a force. She doesn’t just rescue dogs, she supports the fosters who open their homes, coordinates medical care, and ensures every dog has the best chance to thrive.
That shepherd in the store? Just one of many whose lives are brighter today because of Roxy.
Roxy’s Ranch Haven is powered entirely by fosters and donations. If you’ve ever thought about fostering, this is the kind of work that truly changes lives. And if fostering isn’t an option, every donation goes directly toward food, veterinary care, and supporting these dogs as they wait for their forever homes!
