My first political event was while I was at SFSU studying photojournalism. I was in the darkroom, and suddenly students were quickly exiting.  The Rodney King verdict was just annoucned and the next thing I knew, the department was empty.  I grabbed my camera, eight rolls of film and spent the entire afternoon shooting.  Eventually, I, along with 300 other grandmothers, children, students and anyone else the police could wrangle, wound up in jail for the sudden curfew.  I still love the intensity and energy of shooting these kinds of events.
